Looking at photos taken during Pavone's only performance in São Paulo, on 7 May 1970, one can't imagine how things were tense between Rita and her manager-husband. When Rita looked at the audience from behind the curtains a few minutes before the show started she realized Teatro Aquarius was only half-filled. She went into a temper tantrum starting a scathing argument with Teddy Reno. According to Malú Pelaes, our Fan Club friend who'd volunteered to help Rita with little chores backstage, the petite chanteuse flew into a rage calling her manager-husband all kinds of names. Apparently, Rita blamed Teddy for not having done enough about advertising the recital. What Rita or Teddy didn't know is that since their last visit in May 1965, things had changed dramatically in Brazil.
In the 5 years since Rita had performed at Teatro Record - she was shown to the whole country by the lens of TV Record, the leading station in the country then - a lot of stuff had changed. The Military Dictatorship which imposed its iron will on Brazil had consolidated its power and chose TV Globo, a Rio de Janeiro station as its 'darling'. 'O Globo', a conservative daily had supported the right wing coup d'etait from the start, in 1964, was given a TV station that would soon obscure all others. In the process, São Paulo ended up losing its position as the leading city in Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro was back at the top.
When Teddy Reno signed up for Pavone to tour Brazil in 1970, he wouldn't have had a clue of those changes. TV Record was 3rd or 4th in the ratings so he lost his 'contact' in São Paulo. Mr Reno must have taken a crash course on Brazilian politics after arriving here on 6 May 1970. He must have been told that now, if he wanted Rita Pavone to be shown on TV he would have to go to Rio... and that's what they did. They flew to Rio and Rita was inserted in a variety programme called 'Mister Show', commanded by Agildo Ribeiro.
